The Greater Hilltop Area League for the Arts (GHALA)

History of GHALA

The Greater Hilltop Area League for the Arts (GHALA) was formed in September 1990 to promote, encourage, and support the arts in the Greater Hilltop Area. Its members include students, art lovers, and amateur and professional artists — all dedicated to increasing the level of art appreciation in our community.

GHALA merged with Friends of the Hilltop in late 2011. GHALA continues to operate as an independent league while being a program of Friends of the Hilltop.

Meetings

GHALA meets with Friends of the Hilltop on the second Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. at the Hilltop branch of the Columbus Metropolitan Library. The Board does not meet in December, January, or July.

Membership

Membership is open to artists and art lovers, alike. Membership privileges include opportunities to exhibit and market artwork, reasonable fees to enter all GHALA shows and exhibits, advance information on art activities throughout the community, social and professional interaction with fellow artists and art lovers, opportunities to publish short stories and poetry, and receipt of GHALA’s newsletter, Art-i-Facts.

Leadership

GHALA is in search of a chairman for 2012. Please contact Gary Baker at 614-404-3024 if you are interested.

Activities and Events

Art Exhibits: Special month-long juried and judged art exhibits at various locations around central Ohio. Past exhibits have been held at the Columbus Cultural Arts Center, Franklin Park Conservatory, Rhodes Tower, and Columbus State College.

Bean Dinner Exhibit: A special one-day exhibit at the annual Hilltop Business Association Historic Hilltop Bean Dinner, usually held the last Saturday of June.

Student Scholarships & Exhibits: Art exhibits for students, including participation in the annual Hilltop Business Association Historic Hilltop Bean Dinner. GHALA also awards youth scholarships to the Columbus College of Art and Design Saturday School Program.

Artist Receptions & Recognitions

The Pinnacle: GHALA has been publishing the Pinnacle since 1997. The Pinnacle features the best of short stories, poetry and lyrics, as well as black and white drawings and photographs. GHALA membership is not required (but we would love for you to join!) for anyone wishing to submit to the Pinnacle. The youngest artist published (so far) in the Pinnacle is 8 years old; the oldest is just as young in spirit, if not in years.
